Tagfold Documentation

Tagfold is a free Azure DevOps extension for reviewing work item tags. It lists project tag definitions and observed work item counts, groups likely near-duplicates, and lets you rename, merge, or delete tags with confirmation. It is available free on the Visual Studio Marketplace.

What Tagfold Does

  • Lists project tag definitions with observed counts of work items that use each tag. A count describes work item usage; it does not show whether a tag is used as a pull request label.
  • Groups tags that look like near-duplicates: the same word in a different case, or a likely typo.
  • Rename a shared project tag definition; the change is applied through Azure DevOps.
  • Merge moves the source tag to the target on work items you can access. Restricted work items and PR labels stay unchanged. The source tag definition stays in the project; delete it separately with confirmation.
  • Delete a tag, with the affected count shown up front and the tag's name typed to confirm.

Where to Find It

After installing Tagfold in your organization, open a project and go to Project Settings → Tagfold. There is no account to create and nothing to configure.

How to Use It

  1. Open Project Settings → Tagfold in the project you want to clean up.
  2. Review the tag list and its usage counts. Near-duplicate tags are grouped together.
  3. Rename a shared project tag definition to correct its name.
  4. Merge moves the source tag to the target on work items you can access. Tagfold shows the observed work item count before it runs; restricted work items and PR labels stay unchanged. The source tag definition stays in the project; delete it separately with confirmation.
  5. Delete a tag you no longer need by typing its exact name to confirm.

Safety

  • Merge re-reads each work item's current tags immediately before writing, so a tag someone else added while the page was open is not dropped.
  • The merge keeps the source tag definition. Cancellation or an interrupted request can leave some work item updates complete and a dispatched update with an unknown outcome. There is no guaranteed automatic rollback; download the receipt and inspect current tags before retrying.
  • Delete requires typing the tag's exact name; there is no one-click delete.
  • If you do not have permission to change tags in a project, Tagfold tells you instead of failing silently.

Permissions and Privacy

ItemDetail
Scopevso.work_write: read and write access to work items, used to count, rename, merge, and delete tags.
Where data goesTags and work items are read and updated in your Azure DevOps organization with your own sign-in. Tagfold can download tags.csv with tag names and observed counts, and a merge receipt with work item IDs, source and target names, results, and error details. These browser downloads are saved on your device; protect them under your organization's data rules.
What it can changeOnly what your Azure DevOps account is already allowed to change in that project.
Backend and analyticsNone. Tagfold has no Bacumi server and collects no usage analytics.

See the Tagfold privacy and data notice for details about data use, storage, downloads, and deletion.

Limitations

  • Bulk apply or remove of a tag across a set of query results is not included; Azure DevOps already does this from the query results view.
  • Bulk deletion of tags with zero observed work item usage is unavailable in the launch release. A zero count does not establish that a tag is unused as a pull request label.
  • Tagfold works on one project at a time.
